The Autumn Equinox: A Small Ritual for the Turning of the Season

September 23, 2026 · 3 min read

On September 22, for a single day, the light and the dark come out almost exactly even. The sun rises due east and sets due west, and the hours of daylight match the hours of night before the balance tips, gently, toward the longer evenings. It is called the equinox, and for most of human history it was a date people marked, with harvests, gatherings, and a pause to notice that the year had turned.

You do not need a festival to take part. The equinox is a quiet invitation to shift your pace, your light, and the textures you reach for, and a small ritual at home is more than enough to honor it.

What the equinox actually changes

Practically, the equinox is a hinge. After it, evenings arrive earlier every day and the air holds less moisture. The change is gradual enough that we tend not to notice until one morning the heating clicks on and our hands feel tight after washing.

The season shifts what skin wants before it shifts our habits. Lighter textures that felt right in August begin to feel a little thin. The scents we wanted at the height of summer, all citrus and sea air, start to sit oddly against wool and warm drinks. The equinox is a good day to notice that, and to adjust on purpose rather than by accident.

A ritual for the evening of the turn

We like to keep this simple and unhurried, and to do it in the evening, since evening is the part of the day the equinox gives back to us.

  1. Change the light. Turn off the overhead and switch on a lamp. Light a candle if you have one. The point is to move from daylight brightness to something lower and warmer, because that is what the coming weeks will look like.
  2. Take a bath or a slower shower. Bath + Shower Gel, warm water, and a Shower Steamer on the floor of the shower if you want the steam to carry a scent. Let it take longer than usual.
  3. Move to a richer texture. This is the heart of it. Put the lotion aside for the evening and reach for Body Butter, warming a little between your palms and pressing it into skin while it is still damp. Shea butter and coconut oil give it weight; ExSeed® Deep Moisturizing Complex, the cold-pressed seed oil blend in every body care formula, leaves skin feeling nourished as the air dries out.
  4. Finish with hands and feet. Hand Crème for the hands, Foot Balm for the heels. These are the places that feel the season first.
  5. Sit for a moment. With a cup of something warm, in the lamplight, before the evening carries on. Notice that it is darker at this hour than it was a month ago, and that this is fine.

Choosing a scent for the turn

There is no wrong answer here, but the equinox tends to favor scents with some warmth in them. Coconut Ambre Vanille is the obvious comfort: creamy, soft, and quietly sweet, a scent that reads like a cardigan. Orange Ginger keeps some brightness while adding a warm, spiced hum that suits cooler mornings. Cyprès leans green and woody, like a walk under trees just as the leaves begin to turn.

If you are not ready to let summer go entirely, Agave Pear sits comfortably between seasons: fresh and crisp, but with a mellow sweetness that does not feel out of place as the evenings cool.

Balance, briefly

The equinox is a day of balance, and it is worth borrowing that idea for a moment. Not everything has to be overhauled at the turn of the season. A slightly warmer light, a slightly richer texture, a slightly slower evening: small adjustments, made with attention, are what carry us comfortably from one season into the next.

Half light, half dark, and then the year leans toward the quiet months.

If you are looking for the richer textures and warmer scents that suit the weeks ahead, they are gathered together in our collections.
